SAN FRANCISCO. February,1995. Bandits struck the newly opened Modern Art Museum, stealing several priceless Picasso paintings and vandalizing a sculpture by Jeff Koons. Police were baffled when the stolen paintings were returned unharmed two days later, along with a videotape made during the robbery. The video allegedly shows the thieves disquised as Andy Warhol and Vincent Van Gogh as they prepare for and perpetrate the heist. Citing the museum's refusal to exhibit local artists while receiving a large percentage of the local arts funding, the theives insist the robbery was politically motivated performance art, commited only to attract media attention to their plight. The alleged artists also apologized for tipping over the Koons sculpture. "15 Minutes" is the film behind the heist- and the artists who perpetrated it. Over the course of several weeks, guerilla-style film and video crews followed the artists 24 hours a day, and along with actual news coverage, tell the tale of taking the media and the art world hostage in an effort to manufacture their "15 Minutes" of fame.
