Occasionally you Will find a white wire going to a switch. This is because the previous electrition created what is called a "Switched loop". According to the Electrical code he was supposed to have painted or put black electircal tape around the white conductor so that it would never be mistaken as the "Neutral" but few people bother to do that.

Actually to a switch you will NEVER have a white wire and a black wire. You will Always have two black wires. The white wire (neutral) is NEVER run to a switch. The white wire is typically found connected to and outlet but never to a switch.
