Bon + sai means tree + pot, the pots are from heavy, hq material. The hole in the pot (often there are more big holes and several small ones) allows the tree drop water down (in a case of accident) besides this many bonsais can be watered from bottom. (Sometimes you are unable to water them twice a day...)

Would it not be easier to just use a large piece of screen cut to fit the bottom of the pot instead of using two screens and all that wire?

what is unique about a bonsai pot and not a regular pot and why does it have holes in it. Also why is 'bonsai soil!' needed? Whats wrong with natural ground soil?!
