It's more than just a player, it's a platform. Yes, Youtube does use it and so do many ads. But you have to have some sort of software to create Flash stuff. That's the software Adobe makes. Adobe Flash is the software that developers use to create content that can be played by the Flash Player.

adobe - bunch of incompetent programmers who can't even write a flash player capable of playing full screen video on average hardware in linux... if they only realized how important this whole linux thing was going to be to their business model in the upcoming years and put more engineering cycle toward making flash work seamlessly with linux....
