Lately, fights are getting up again. Striking is the trump card for many fighters when grappling is at a similar level (Mir vs Nog). We can also see a resurgence in traditional striking arts (often ironically called "unorthodox"). Unorthodox strikers like Lyoto Machida and Cung Le manage to baffle their opponents with long-forgotten arts like Karate, TKD and Kung Fu. Could this mean the comeback of TMAs?
My point: don't bash any art, in a few years this art might reach the top, you never know.

He also does TKD but first - a little history.
Before MMA came along grappling was considered gay and useless. Boxing and later TKD was considered "the best". In the first UFCs Muay Thai and Boxing failed completely. In fact, Karate and Ninjitsu did a lot better. Due to Royce's victories BJJ was soon crowned as "the best". When Gracie left, wrestling took its spot. Then strikers with takedown defence started winning. Finally, cross-training became essential and the BJJ+MT concept became popular.

cung le does sanda, san shou whatever you wanna call it as his base style. its modified muay thai and it is a recent invention of the chinese. its not kung fu in any traditional sense, its just modified muay thai for a slightly more open ruleset. the chinese lost so many challenge matches they just copied the style and called it their own. no one practiced sanda before muay thai spread to china.
and cung le is over rated. he couldnt hack it intop competition
he also trains straight mma now

There are alot of good things you can take from both of these discipline and an aweful lot of good fighters started of with a background of Karate! If anyone has taken the discipline and had a good teacher they learned some shit and have respect for it!!!

doesn't matter if it's too stiff you can tell by the arm guards since karate uses a traditional upper guard stance, also the uniform is different from a blackbelt uniform, but as you can see most taekwondo users will recognize his arm guard, which is none.
