weather it was Hitler or anyone else there is no excuse for the beastial brutality, it has happened since and can (and probably wil, lets pray it doesn't)happen again, I do not have much mercy for hitler, once he was a child and that is sad that he grew into the monster he became. A leader can be a lot more humane than hitler and still be a monster.

also the polish head of state givs a statment to the polish news paper stating that " Germany cannot stop poland from invading germany" that would have been enough for me.
the national socialist pleaded , in writing, to the league of nations to interveen in the slaughtering of greman citizens inside poland and got no help.
germany had no choice but to invade poland.

I just added a video response - it's a bit different than the other WW II related stuff. It's a video of John McCutcheon performing his song "Christmas in the Trenches" which was based on the story of the 1915 Christmas truce.
For me, it points out how easy it is to de-humanize an enemy until one comes face to face and realizes that we all have the same basic wants and needs.
The leaders who are not in the line of fire, do not want soldiers to think of the enemy as human beings.

This is, undoubtedly, one of the finest pieces of television ever made. It is a deeply sensitive, informative and incredible pieces of work.

Well, every government of every country in the history of the world has killed innocent men.
grewil2 (October 30th, 2008 @ 8:13 am)
How about innocent men?
Beanfold (October 22nd, 2008 @ 6:25 pm)
Agreed, but killing innocent women and children is totally unacceptable, circumstances are irrelevant.

If it wasent Hitler it would have been someone else. The versailles treaty absolutly crippled the german people and was a slap in the face.
Hitler did what had to be done for his people.
First the wiermar sign the worst treaty known to man , the british continue a blockaid that pevents food from getting to germans , france occupies germany from 1923-1925 and rapes germany .
These are examples. I would have done the same thing as Hitler, at least the first 2 years.

... and if we don't get our faces out of the TV and if we fail to resist the encroachment of corporatism (even via Internet), we will lose that jewel and the millions of dead of the 20th century will have indeed been entirely in vain.

murphicus... thanks for posting this. I also saw the series when I was around 15/16 in London. It should be required seeing to make people understand how fragile democracy can be. There is no space for long debates here, and most people tend to have the mentality and language of SA toilet cleaners, but there are definitely paralells to be made with today's political spirit. One of the most precious things to come from the beastly World Wars was some form of democracy, labour rights, etc...
