I fell in love with Chapin in 1987, "Hometown Girl" the first time I heard her voice... went out and bought her CD the same day- have seen her every time she is in the bay area ever since- it's like she is writng my autobiography without even knowing me... I guess it's because we are the same age and are "still growing up" in the same time(era)

Here's a bizarre one for you guys...I always wanted to hear Joey Ramone of The Ramones sing this song in his trademark whiny/sassy voice. Too bad he died. This song was written for him, his voice, and his style. The Ramones were my favorite punk band and Mary Chapin Carpenter is my favorite female singer. I'd like to see her work with Shane McGowan, Mike Ness, Steve Earle, or Henry Rollins. Maybe as twist, let Zakk Wylde do the guitar solo.

There was this great show from Austin City Limits in 1993 (I think) where she sings this song a little faster with more ooomph! (for want of a more descriptive term). Her band sang some great background harmony. That was a great version, if you can get a hold of it.

Ah, this song brings back tears & memories for me. That was me in the early 90's (from verse in the song) actually doing what MCC is singing about....standing at a pay phone trying to call my boyfriend & knowing he was there but wouldn't pick up his phone......... and trying to find out where I stood. So long ago now and also thinking, "You win again." Many years ago now but still this song brings back a lot of memories of that long lost time. Mary's songs are so prolific. Great songwriter!
