basic here a step is the next white key and a half step is the black key in between. the note you start on is the key of the scale. remembering the step sequences is whats important about this scale. You will need to know this to progress. there are also minor scales. I don't even play keys more a guitarist

learning scales is important- because even if you memorize an entire song, if you forget a note you know that it's one of those notes in that key and by how much it's pitched up or down you can usually tell what note it should be, I don't play from memory or read music- I play from thinking about the song and then guess what not it's going to be the pattern for a major scale, which takes him about a year to explain is W-W-H-W-W-W-H
