Bonsai is an ancient art form. It takes many years to turn a common tree specimen into a bonsai-like creation. This art requires a whole lot of patience. Being very gentle is also a helpful trait. You must be able to use wire wrap to guide the branches wherever one wishes. I have seen some spectacular bonsai, some over 300 years old as small as a half-foot! Others look almost as nice, only 5-10 years old (takes at least this long for your cultivated effort to really look like anything anyhow.)

If you want to learn how to properly cultivate a bonsai tree - the way that has been passed down by monks for thousands of years, take my advice and get off of youtube. Go to your favorite search engine (hopefully a Google-derivative like yahoo) and type in 'Bonsai' Search around my friend. Stop by Wikipedia and look at their informative page on Bonsai. But I will warn you - unless you learn from a Chinese or Japanese source, you are probably not getting the right information. Good Luck!

My dad had one but someone stole it from our apartment shelf thing 10 years ago and he still regrets leaving it outside even after we moved into a house and had a better life. Everytime someone mentions Bonsai he says it
