Not many bands are able to evolve and still sounding interesting. Think of Greenday, Offspring, Metallica or Heideroosjes. They all have had their ups and downs but globally seen they only got worse. Just a few bands keep reneing themselves like Radiohead (though I'm not really a fan of the newer stuff, I think they resisted the call of the cheesymusic Gods) or Eels.

IMO evolve or disappear changing music style happened to a lot of bands before and this will continue throughout weezer's history many things happened that made weezer sit back and think. i agree with u though, the black album was a little dissapointing
