Not sure what you'd mean, but it's not really an open plains type of state. It's almost completely mountains and woodlands, lined with roads and trails and river valleys.

Even though I'm from Northern California I used this song as my motivation for finishing my time in the Navy and getting back to the country. I used to listen to it out in the Persian Gulf. I just read an article that stated that John didn't write the song and haden't been to WV at the time the song was recorded. Ironically neither had Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert who first came up with the song while traveling up to Maryland). The two then told Denver about the song and all edited it.
